Considered by many to be one of the East’s most scenic and challenging resort golf courses, the Leatherstocking Golf Course at The Otesaga Resort has been awarded 4-½ stars by Golf Digest, received the second highest overall rating for public courses in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut by Zagat and ranked “one of the ten best public courses in the state” by Golfweek. In addition, The Otesaga, located in Cooperstown, NY, was voted one of the 50 top U.S. golf resorts by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, in recognition of the course’s excellent design and level of difficulty, as well as of the quality of accommodations and dining at the resort.
In addition to the quality of play, the 18-hole Leatherstocking Golf Course, designed by Devereux Emmet in 1909, has been hailed for its commitment to high environmental standards and preservation of wildlife habitat. Audubon International officially designated Leatherstocking a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary,” under its Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), a program supported by the United States Golf Association.
Sweeping along the western shore of Lake Otsego, the Leatherstocking Golf Course’s deep sand bunkers, well-protected greens and numerous water hazards present a formidable challenge. With elevated fairways providing views of the lake, the course ranks among the most scenic in the Northeast. The 18th hole may be the most exciting on the course – a 505-yard, par 5 with an island tee box on Lake Otsego. The hole “dog legs” to the left around the lake, and the green is located in front of The Otesaga’s veranda.
After playing, golfers can enjoy lunch and snacks at the Leatherstocking Club House as they enjoy the breathtaking view of Otsego Lake. The well-stocked Leatherstocking Golf Shop offers golf club rentals as well as sports apparel and supplies.
Under the direction of Director of Golf and PGA member Dan Spooner and his staff, Leatherstocking also offers first-rate golf instruction and practice facilities.
