A Celebration of Our Agricultural Community: Climate Change & Its Impact on Farming in Central New York, the third annual conference on food and farming at The Farmers' Museum, informs and inspires farmers and the public, unifying and driving the agricultural economy in Central New York. Featuring knowledgeable speakers, vendors, and a workshop on resilience farming, the conference is free for all to attend.

With a focus on the theme "Climate Change & Its Impact on Farming in Central New York," the conference will provide essential tools and inspiration to help farmers take positive action. Farmers will be offered the latest and best information to grow their businesses and products in exciting ways, while also broadening capabilities. General attendees will learn how to better their families and their communities by making informed choices about their food and recreation.

Author, scientist, educator and farmer, Dr. Laura Lengnick, will offer the keynote address "Climate Risk, Resilience and the Future of Food." With climate change upon us and agriculture inextricably involved, Dr. Lengnick discusses the practical lessons learned by some of America's best sustainable farmers and ranchers growing food across the U.S. with the latest climate science and resilience theory to share a message of hope in these troubling times.

Dr. Lengnick, author of the book Resilient Agriculture: Cultivating Food Systems for a Changing Climate, has explored agriculture and food system sustainability and resilience through more than 30 years of work as a researcher, policy-maker, educator and farmer. Her work in soil quality and sustainable farming systems was nationally-recognized with a USDA Secretary's Honor award in 2002 and she contributed to the 3rd National Climate Assessment as a lead author of the 2012 USDA report Climate Change and U.S. Agriculture: Effects and Adaptation. After more than a decade leading the academic program in sustainable agriculture at Warren Wilson College, Dr. Lengnick left the college in 2014 to launch Cultivating Resilience LLC, a private firm offering climate risk management services. She is a member of the North Carolina Agriculture and Forestry Adaptation Work Group, is an affiliated researcher with the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project's Local Food Research Center, and holds an adjunct faculty position in the Horticulture Department at North Carolina State University.

Other speakers at the conference include Dr. Jason Evans, Associate Professor of Agricultural Business Management, SUNY Cobleskill (Policy and Economics, 10:15 a.m.); Dr. M. Todd Walter, Professor and Director of the Water Resources Institute, Cornell University (Soil and Water, 11:15 a.m.); and Dr. Michael Hoffman, Executive Director, Cornell Institute for Climate Smart Solutions (Effects on Agriculture and Food Security, 1:00 p.m.).

At 2:15 p.m., take part in the workshop "New Times, New Tools: Cultivating Climate Resilience on Your Farm" with Dr. Laura Lengnick. As we enter the 21st century, farm and food businesses face novel challenges created by climate change. Dr. Lengnick draws on the adaptation stories of 25 award-winning sustainable farmers growing food across the U.S. to teach about successful farming strategies for managing increased weather variability and extremes. Learn how to assess your climate risk and use ecosystem-based adaptive management tools to cultivate climate resilience on your farm.

Exhibitors at the 2016 conference include SUNY Cobleskill, Chobani, Otsego Land Trust, Otsego County Conservation Association, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Otsego County Master Gardeners, New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health, and Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety.

Admission to the conference is free. Food will be available: Chobani will offer yogurt in the morning and Townsend Catering will be sell lunch starting at 12:15 p.m.
